In order to study the effect of irrigation with saline water on physiology, biochemical and anatomy characteristics, growth and yield of different melon cultivars, an experiment was performed in Split-plot with randomized complete with three replications. Treatments were two resistant melon cultivar to salinity (Sooski (Sk) and Diamond (Dm)) and two sensitive cultivars (Daregzi (Dg) and Zard Ivanaki (Zi)) with two salinity levels (0 (control), 8 dS/m of NaCl). The results showed that fresh and dry weight of shoot, fruit and seed weight, fruit acidity, fruit firmness, fruit length/diameter, fruit number and yield, photosynthesis rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, decreased with saline water irrigation. Resistant cultivars (Sk and Dm) showed the highest amount of above mention parameters in salinity. Resistant cultivars had greater proline, phenol, antioxidant activity in salinity. Generally, the results showed that by applying salt stress, growth parameters, photosynthetic parameters and quantitative characteristics of the fruit decreased. This decrease was lower in Sk resistant cultivar. it seems that melon cultivar achieved their resistant; firstly, leading growth to yield instead of vegetative growth; secondly, increasing antioxidant and phenol content to reducing salinity deleterious effect, and finally, increasing TSS to have more osmotic adjustment for promoting photosynthesis in the acceptable level for producing enough assimilate for commercial yield in salinity. Conclusively, Sk and Dm cultivar can be recommended to the farmers of central region of Iran and same condition of other part of world and irrigation with saline water to 8 ds/m.
