Abstract:   (127 Views)
This study aimed to determine the efficiency levels of beef cattle farms in the province of Izmir and identify the factors that affect their efficiency. The study covers 62 farms engaged in beef cattle farming in five different districts of Izmir. According to the Constant Return to Scale and Variable Return to Scale assumptions on input, 24% and 44% of the farms were  fully efficient, respectively. The average efficiency scores obtained were 0.87 and 0.91, with a Scale Efficiency of 0.96. The Bootstrap Data Envelopment Analysis method was used to determine whether the farms' efficiency scores should be calculated. The Bootstrap Data Envelopment Analysis for beef cattle farming provided the result that the analysis should be conducted with the Constant Return to Scale assumption. The average corrected input oriented Constant Return to Scale efficiency after bootstrapping was found to be 0.82. According to the results of truncated regression analysis, there was a positive relationship between corrected input oriented efficiency scores and both the live weight gain per animal and the level of education of the farm owner. On the other hand, the use of foreign labor, the amount of concentrated feed, the amount of straw, and the fattening period were found to have a statistically significant negative impact on efficiency. As a result, farms that achieved higher live weight gain per animal and more educated farm owners obtained higher output per unit of input used, indicating higher technical efficiency.
